At the moment, I’m in the South of France (more exactly, in the Provence) for a few weeks of vacation. Nothing but swimming, reading and eating. Lots of eating!
We’re staying at Mrinthekitchen’s sister, and every day we have long lunches outside. And when I say long, I mean long… a 3 hour lunch is not rare, and even for a food-lover like me, that’s sometimes a bit much. I’m just not used to sitting down that long for lunch, especially when the sun is shining and the pool (or sea) is looking especially inviting. (And I kid you not, last sunday’s lunch was from 1 until 8 pm! Needless to say we skipped dinner…)
But I try to enjoy every minute, since it will be over soon and I”ll be back to office lunches again. Just 30 minutes (including getting the food at the buffet and standing in line at the checkout) to quickly fill our stomachs before it’s back to work. And that’s on a good day, because I often eat a quick sandwich in my car while driving from one appointment to another.
Reading what I’ve just typed, it’s all the more encouraging to savour every minute of these long relaxed lunches, prepared and eaten al fresco. There’s nothing we need to do today, but to enjoy and have a good time (ok, there are some dishes to do…). We even have less and less of cooking to do, since the mini-chef and her cousin are big enough to prepare food on their own (and they actually enjoy doing so). Their specialty these days is gâteau au chocolat (I won’t be any slimmer when I leave this place!).
In the Provence, every day in August is a hot one (contrary to Paris or Utrecht in the Netherlands, where there’s much more variety in summer weather).
So, what do we need on hot days?
Right, a cold and refreshing drink! This grapefruit/strawberry shake is made with nothing but fresh fruit and sparkling water, a refreshing and healthy treat. Ready in no time and there’s not a person who doesn’t like it. Perfect for the poolside.
And now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off for some big time relaxing :-)
- 1 grapefruit, peeled and cut in parts
- 6 big (frozen) strawberries
- 200 ml (3/4 cup + 1 tbsp) sparkling water
- Optional: 1 tbsp sugar* and ice cubes
- Optional: Fresh mint leaves, to garnish
- Put the strawberries and the grapefruit parts in a blender and blend until you have a smooth mixture
- Pour in a high glass, add the sparkling water and mix well
- If needed, add some ice (if you're using frozen strawberries the drink should already be cold enough) and/or sugar
- Garnish with the mint leaves
